The inherent features of a tree will give variations in the grain and colour, and can also be affected by the cut of the timber. This makes every piece of wood unique and is one of the many benefits of working with natural materials. Each species of wood has its own characteristic grain patterns from straight to wild grain and is part of the beauty of a natural product.

Knots and dots are one of the most common marks in wooden products, these may vary in shape, size and colour and are created where branches or buds are grown out of the tree trunk. Medullary rays are markings which are frequently found in oak and are where the nutrients have been carried to the surface of the tree trunk or branch. These natural markings all emphasise the uniqueness and quality of wooden products.

Over time natural timber will change its colour, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to minimise this. However, timber will still naturally mellow and darken over time.

Wooden products will. Wood is a living material and can therefore naturally change its appearance over time, especially when the surface is exposed to direct sunlight.

Wood is alive, and that’s important to know in the maintenance of your wooden kitchen utensils. Wood is a reactive material and requires the necessary attention. Wood should not be washed in the dishwasher, and you should always let wood air dry after washing dishes (without the use of a heat source). Also, do not soak your wooden utensils in water. This prevents cracking and warping.

In addition, we recommend that you regularly oil your wooden kitchen utensils to keep them in optimal condition.
